Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Fleshy herbs.

Stems: Stems bright red to dark red, ascending from a usually long repent base, 20–50 cm long, usually trichotomously many-branched, internodes 1–8 cm long, with 3–4 longitudinal ridges, glabrous or with a few scattered hairs.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite or whorled 2–6 per node. Blades obovate to obovate–elliptic, 0.7–2(–2.5) cm long, 0.4–1.1 cm wide. Apex rounded to broadly obtuse. Base cuneate. Surfaces glabrous or sparsely hirtellous near and on margins;; upper surfaces yellowish green to green; lower surfaces pale green, thinly fleshy, drying somewhat coriaceous. Margins usually somewhat revolute, at least when dry. Obscurely pinnately 5-veined, only midrib prominent. Petioles 0.3–0.8 cm long, glabrous. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in fleshy spikes several, terminal and axillary in the uppermost nodes, 0.8–5 cm long, the rachis ca. 0.5–1 mm in diameter, glabrous, flowers moderately congested, peduncles 0.3–1 cm long, glabrous. Flowers bisexual (perfect), perianth absent. Each flower subtended by a peltate bract. Calyx (sepals) absent. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 2. Ovary superior, ovoid, 1-carpellate, 1-celled; ovules 1 per cell, orthotropous, erect; stigmas slightly subterminal or terminal.

Fruit: Fruit broadly ovoid–ellipsoid; ca. 1–1.3 mm long; papillose–viscid with sessile glands. Seeds 1 per fruit; with scanty endosperm and copious; starchy perisperm.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Wet forests and margins of bogs.

Elevation Range: 1,150–1,830 m.
